Description

Oxford Archaeology is one of the largest independent archaeological practices in Europe. Our size and reputation ensure that we work on the most exciting and varied range of projects and can offer real opportunities for long term employment and career development.

The position:

An opportunity has arisen for the right enthusiastic individual to work within our Heritage Management Service Department responsible for both consultancy-based work and for undertaking many of the numerous exciting research-based projects we work on every year. If you are looking for a job beyond just undertaking desk-based assessments and environmental impact assessments (although there will be plenty of opportunity to still do these) and to be challenged to apply your archaeological and historical knowledge in many interesting ways, then this may be the job for you.

Working as part of the Oxford office-based team, you will gather and collate diverse forms of information used in products such as Desk-Based Assessments, Environmental Impact Assessments and Heritage Assessments. This will include the use of historic mapping, Heritage Environment Record data, aerial photography, LiDAR data, survey data and secondary sources. The Researcher will ultimately use such data to prepare draft assessment reports and contribute to the work of others. Experience of the use of some or all of these data types and use of these skill sets would be a definite advantage although on-the job training will be provided as necessary.

The successful applicant will need to apply good attention to detail and will have a broad understanding of British Archaeology. In addition, a professional and considered approach to complex and sometimes sensitive issues and scenarios will be required.

Position requirements:

  • Experience in the use of HER data, LiDAR and aerial photos and experience of walkover surveys would be a distinct advantage.
  • Knowledge of the use of CAD and/or GIS.
  • Thorough general knowledge and understanding of archaeology, particularly British Archaeology, and the principles, practices, and processes relevant to archaeological investigations and the preparation of archaeological desk-based assessments and impact assessments.
  • Good working knowledge of archaeological planning legislation and guidance.
  • A full, clean driving licence is essential for this role, and you will also need to meet OA’s Driver requirements.
  • Good attention to detail.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Good organisation skills.
  • Good writing skills with the ability to communicate well both internally and with clients and external parties.
  • Membership of CIfA would be advantageous.

The role will be full time and based in our Oxford office. Flexible/hybrid working may be possible for the right candidate

This is a great opportunity to further your career and be part of a supportive, dynamic and passionate team.

In return, we offer a range of employee benefits.

Employee benefits:

  • Competitive salary range £25,095 - £26,366 (appointments will be made based on demonstrated ability, previous experience and CIfA membership if appropriate).
  • 32 days holiday (including statutory holidays and concessionary days at Christmas).
  • Company pension scheme.
  • Training and opportunities for career progression.
  • 100% of CIfA subscription fees.
  • Cycle to work scheme.
